The
Hebrew word Kesher means "link" or "bond."
Shaaray Tefila's Kesher program connects synagogue volunteers
with Upper East Side Jewish elderly residents by delivering holiday
packages and establishing personal relationships.
Sponsored
by our congregation's Social Action Committee, the program begins
with the preparation of approximately 100 gift bags of food during
an Oneg Shabbat following an Erev Shabbat Friday evening service
several times per year. Volunteers then deliver the bags
to local residents whose names, addresses and phone numbers are
provided. Participants are encouraged not just to deliver the
packages, but to stay and chat, bringing a little companionship
and community to elderly Jews who share our neighborhood. A return
postcard indicates the completion of this gratifying mitzvah.
Check
our monthly newsletter "The Messenger" or call the Temple
office at 212-535-8008 to find out the schedule. Andrew Kosloff,
a member of our Board of Trustees, chairs this important effort.
