“Al
sh’losha devarim ha-olam omed” (The world is
sustained by three things) Simon the Just teaches in a famous
passage from Pirke Avot, the “Ethics of the Ancestors.”
Shaaray Tefila has made these principles -- Torah, avodah (worship),
and g’mllut hasadim (acts of loving-kindness)--the foundation
of our community through our Shabbat and holiday services; through
our study and practice of the teachings of the Hebrew Bible and
rabbinic interpretation; and through Social Action programs that
reach out to local and global communities.
These three pillars also form the foundation of
our Adult Education programming: the study of Torah and rabbinic
literature; the exploration of prayer and worship and spirituality,
in their traditional and contemporary forms; the consideration
of how our Jewishness can prompt acts of loving-kindness and social
justice; and the ongoing celebration of Jewish culture, in all
its diversity and richness.
A taste of past programs will illustrate
the variety of classes and programs that Temple Shaaray Tefila
regularly offers:
TORAH
STUDY
Whether here at the Temple, or in the neighborhood where you
work, we offer opportunities to learn from and embrace the core
text of our tradition.
Saturday
Minyan& Torah Study
After our popular Saturday minyan, which attracts congregants
of all ages, we continue with a vigorous discussion of the weekly
Torah portion, including commentaries of the great sages of
our tradition and of our own day.
Wednesday Midtown Torah Study
During biweekly sessions, held during lunchtime, we read and
discuss a piece of text (in English), verse by verse, probing
and exploring every facet.
Wednesday Torah Talk
Lunchtime
Learning at the Temple: Variations on a (Torah) Theme,
Rabbi Jonathan Stein, Rabbi Darren Levine, Cantor Bruce
Ruben
HEBREW
Prayer book and biblical Hebrew is taught regularly, in both ongoing
classes and occasional pre-holiday marathon series. Sessions have
been offered in the morning and the evening, for both beginning
and intermediate levels.

ADULT
BAR/BAT MITZVAH
This year-long class, offered biennially for Temple members of
at least two-years’ duration, is an intensive study of Torah
and liturgy, covering history, philosophy, and the practical tools
of Reform worship. The program culminates in a joyous and unforgettable
joint springtime ceremony of B’nai Mitzvah.
ARTS & CULTURE
MONDAYS
Individual evening programs are offered throughout the year: perhaps
the screening of a recent film of Jewish interest; a discussion
of a newly published book; or another opportunity to explore some
facet of the Jewish cultural scene.
COURSES
AND MINI-COURSES
Lectures and classes of two to eight weeks in duration are presented
regularly, taught by members of the clergy as well as outside
instructors. Topics have ranged from Kabbalah (Jewish Mysticism),
to a History of Talmudic Times, to contemporary Mideast Politics.
NASHIM:
A Women’s Study Group
This is a lay-led group, providing a monthly forum for provocative
study, joyful celebration, and open discussion of issues that
are meaningful to the women of Shaaray Tefila.
SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE
Each year, a special Shabbat is devoted to study led by a prominent
figure in the Jewish academic world. A presentation at our Friday
night service begins the program, which continues with study sessions
and luncheon after services on Saturday morning and afternoon.
SHABBATON
A second special Shabbat of study and celebration is offered yearly,
providing an intimate opportunity for extended Saturday morning
and afternoon learning led by our Senior Rabbi. After a luncheon
and a song session, we end with Havdalah.
For more information about these and other
Adult Education programs, see our Adult Education brochure.
