Hashanah morning. Then, we will enter the sanctuary for Selichot and conclude
with the first sounding of the shofar.

Second
Day Rosh Hashanah Lay led Service, Breakfast, and Study Sunday, September 28
Please join us in 5764 for a warm and inspiring morning of prayer,
singing, study, noshing, and fellowship.
For those staying after tefillah and our bagel breakfast, the
study session this year will focus on the Haftarah reading from
the Book of Nehemiah, Chapter 8. This beautiful and insightful
Tanach passage tells of the two-day Rosh Hashanah celebration
observed in ancient times, when the Jewish community just began
to rebuild itself after years of exile.
Open to Temple Shaaray Tefila members and their guests. (You
will be asked to show your High Holy Day Tickets.)

11:15 am, bagel breakfast;

B'av: A Service with Study
Monday, July 26
The Ninth
Day of the Hebrew month of Av commemorates the destruction
of both the First and Second Temple in Jerusalem, as well as
other persecutions and national tragedies throughout our history.
It is marked with a solemn service, a reading of the Book of
Lamentations, and time for considering how contemporary Jews
might find the place for lamenting in our own lives and seasons.
Please see the June Messenger for details or this web site.

Moses on the Couch: Torah Study with Dr. Freud
A special Shabbat lunch and study program
Rabbi Scott Corngold,
Cantor Bruce Ruben, Dr. Robin Kerner
Moses, an Egyptian prince and Oedipal fatherfigure, is murdered
in the wilderness by the Children of Israel, who then sublimate
their patricidal guilt by deifying him in their Holy Texts?!?
Well, that is the kernel of Sigmund Freud's controversial theory
on the development of Torah and the Jewish Religion. Late in
his life and under the shadow of Nazism, the father of modern
psychiatry turned his attention to the origins of his own faith
and people. This special Shabbat program gives us the opportunity
to weigh his maverick approach in the context of our own ideas
about Torah, as Rabbi Corngold, Cantor Ruben, and clinical psychologist
Robin Kerner team-teach and share their understandings and perspectives.
After an overview of the role of Judaism in Freud's life, we'll
then discuss his writing on Jews, Judaism, and the Jewish psyche,
finally trying to apply his interpretations to a reading of the
week's Torah portion. You wont want to miss what may be one of
the liveliest rounds of Torah study ever held at Shaaray Tefila.
Dr. Robin Kerner is the assistant clinical director and director
of psychiatric rehabilitation at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital
Center. She is also assistant clinical professor at the Columbia
University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and maintains
a private practice in Manhattan.
