For
over 157 years, Shaaray Tefila has served the New York Jewish
community by fulfilling the traditional functions of a synagogue:
Beit Tefilah, a
House of Prayer, Beit Hamidrash
a House of Study, and Beit Knesset, a Place of Assembly and Gathering.
Shaaray Tefila has a long and distinguished history of service
to our community and to its members.
Temple
Shaaray Tefila is a traditionally oriented synagogue affiliated
with Reform Judaism. We love and honor our Jewish heritage, and
hope that any Jew, from whatever background, will feel comfortable
with us. Temple Shaaray Tefila, based upon Reform's major philosophical
cornerstones, also incorporates and weaves traditional customs
and rituals into its worship and synagogue practices. We strive
throughout Shabbat, Holy Day, and festival worship services
to offer our members meaningful participation within a warm and
welcoming worship environment.
Shaaray Tefila strives to be an open and inviting congregation,
one that responds to the needs of our members and their families.
Our mission statement outlines six major areas through which we
try to serve our members. These include: the worship of God in
a Reform Jewish mode, lifelong Jewish education, creating a sense
of community, dedication to social justice and personal ethics,
serving the spiritual and pastoral needs of our members and support
of Israel and the Jewish people throughout the world.
We are currently a congregation of about 1450 family
units, and we offer a full range of programatic opportunities
which support our members and the community at large from birth
to death throughout the entire life cycle. We have an experienced
professional staff of rabbis, cantors, educators and administrators
along with a talented group of teachers and support staff who
plan and execute the many activities which happen within the walls
of our building. We are blessed with a committed lay leadership
who guide our congregation with dedication and love.
