Religious School
The Harvey M. Tattelbaum
School of Judaism
With
the support of an active Religious School Committee, and a talented
and dedicated teaching faculty, we offer a full range of Jewish
study to all children of our congregation. The program is designed
to encourage independent thinking and enhance a positive sense
of Jewish identity. Aspects of our cultural background, language,
religious heritage and traditions are included, and instruction
ranges from kindergarten to high school.

We
offer Sunday or Thursday school programs for students in grades
K-3. Students in grades 3-6 increase their hours of study with
a twice-a-week schedule. Students in grades 3-6 can attend either
on Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons, or Monday and Wednesday
afternoons. We offer a choice for Kindergarten-Grade 6 so families
can choose the most convenient schedule.
Students in grades 7-12 will meet on Tuesday evenings and share
dinner together. In addition to weekly classes, students
in grades 8-9 participate in a weekend study retreat at URJ Kutz
Camp with the Rabbis, Cantor, Director of Education, Director
of Youth and Family Programs, and members of the Religious School
faculty.
All students in our school participate in music, art, holiday
celebrations, and field trips to museums and places of Jewish
interest in the city. Special events for our students include
family Shabbat dinners held at the Temple, family education programs,
participation in Nashir! (our Grades 3-6 Choir), and gatherings
for prayer in the Sanctuary..
Attendance at Reform Jewish summer camps is important in instilling
Jewish identity in our children and is strongly encouraged. Significant
scholarship help is available for the Reform movement’s
camps.
A handbook detailing the specifics of our education program is
available through the Religious School office.
In celebration of Rabbi Tattelbaum’s 25th year as our Senior
Rabbi, the Shaaray Tefila Religious School was named The Harvey
M. Tattelbaum School of Judaism. Its programs are coordinated
by our full-time Religious School Director, and are among the
most exciting and stimulating of the many activities at our Temple.
BAR and BAT MITZVAH
We regard Bar and Bat Mitzvah as just one step of many in continuing
Jewish education. We encourage family celebration in our midst,
in keeping with the traditional religious significance of such
occasions.
The
general curriculum of our Religious School equips a child with
an understanding of Jewish life and the ability to read Hebrew
and learn basics about Jewish liturgy. Five years of Religious
School education is a prerequisite for Bar/Bat Mitzvah training,
at least three years before and two following. Any variance in
this requirement must be approved by the professional staff of
the Temple.
For families anticipating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony, we have
an informative manual available.
At Temple Shaaray Tefila, becoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah is only
a beginning. We expect our youngsters to stay on for further
education
in our Upper School program: Confirmation, High School Study,
Youth Group, and student teaching assistantships. Deep
learning begins at the age of Bar and Bat Mitzvah.
CONFIRMATION
The Confirmation year is a unique education program led by the
Rabbis. Classes, which include weekly suppers shared with the
clergy, are conducted seminar-fashion. The group’s sense
of closeness, study, and warmth culminates with the beautiful
ceremony of Confirmation in the late spring. The Confirmation
service, written and conducted by the students and guided by the
Rabbis, affirms their sense of continuity and identity as informed
and caring Jews. Confirmation is a meaningful stepping-stone in
the ongoing Jewish education of Shaaray Tefila's young people.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDY
We offer an ongoing program of academic study for High School
students in our weekly Upper School. The students
choose from a variety of electives and share dinner together
with other
students. As an extension of our High SChool program, we
encourage participation in a summer Israel trip in association
with the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY).
Under careful supervision, they tour and explore all that Israel
has to offer for a good part of the summer. As part of
the New York Regional NFTY group, they also participate in
many inter-Temple
programs, including weekend retreats.
